Artist Description of Cow

Commonly known as Wally Cowleigh, this cow is a distant cousin of the famous Sir Walter Raleigh, who sent Wally to oversee a new settlement in what is now North Carolina.

Unfortunately, Cousin Cowleigh discovered the rich North Carolina meadows, lush with sweet grasses, and neglected his duties as colony leader in favor of grazing. The unhappy settlers, facing a winter with nothing but grass to eat, moved inland and established a colony in the middle of the state. They named this colony “Raleigh” after their famous, distant benefactor.

Wally’s fate is unknown, but rumor suggests that he was a major contributor to the colonists’ first North Carolina barbeque. Wally, like his cousin, was a fop and dressed in Elizabethan finery.

  1. Julie Jarvis says:

Sadly the hat has been removed from Mr. Cowleigh and his collar is a little worse for wear and he is missing his leg ties. But kudos to the artists for the clever take on celebrating Raleigh.
